First Public Health Campaign:
Gotcha Covered
2009
2009 Grant for Mobile HIV Testing & Epidemiological Surveillance
Goal: Identify or conduct 50 HIV tests with youth at high risk for HIV in California's Sonoma County within 2 months. We exceeded that goal through:
-
Administering 52 total HIV tests. (43 our target demographic. No one turned away when seeking care!)
-
Identified 36 additional youth at risk for HIV through on the ground & online outreach
In two weeks of strategy & community relationship building Sean Kelson and I identified:
Three Main Sites:
-Phoenix Teen Clinic, Petaluma
-Phoenix Theatre Show Nights, Petaluma
-Glam Night at The Casbar Nightclub, Santa Rosa
One Secondary Site:
-Larks Parking Lot in Guerneville
Combined with digital presences spread across:
-Official informational website
-targeted local online forums
-MySpace
In five weeks of service provision our presence expanded to 8 additional physical sites split between Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and Guerneville.
Above and beyond: While building community relationships we discovered a long out of date pocket resource guide. We compiled, vetted with community insights, and issued a new robust collection of local resources in the same pocket sized form. See photographs from journal below for full details.

It all started when I was gifted with Photoshop 6. Many local music scene show flyers. Some album art. Printed copies might surface sometime. Maybe they'll turn up!

Santa Rosa Rally For Critical
HIV Services Funding
Keeping momentum up from June 2009's big protest in Sacramento against the proposed budget cuts to critical HIV services: Myself and a colleague galvanized from across Sonoma, Alameda, and San Francisco counties we reached out to local media providing the press kit "Prevent and Educate" included in its entirety below. Santa Rosa's Press Democrat covered the July 8th rally against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed cuts to critical HIV services. Article here. Patients, providers, and activists from across the state successfully applied the pressure necessary to save the $80 million dollar cuts (0.25% of the entire deficit impacting 100's of thousands of people in California receiving services and at-risk of needing services).
Adjusted for inflation the cuts to these critical services would equate to $112.5 million in today's dollars.
(calculated using CPI inflation calculator 2024.)

Points of Distribution

All three fliers delivered in 2009. Printed on thick card stock, glossy, they were inserts for care packages including safer injection and safer sex equipment. The what's in the bag and disposal fliers saw continuous use until 2014. The delivery flier supported delivery service between 2009 and 2011. These were from when Points of Distribution had state and federal funding streams to provide direct service that improved the health outcomes of people who use drugs and the people who love them.
As founding member of Points of Distribution in 2006 I served in dual capacities, Secretary to the Board of Directors & frontline outreach worker when it was a service agency. I continue to serve with the Community Advisory Board.
Currently a full service harm reduction marketplace, Points of Distribution (POD) is focused on providing services & supplies to the broader harm reduction community.

2013-2015
These years where every major community hub in Oakland, San Francisco, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa had my posters up. Couldn't go a day without seeing one of my posters up be it UFO Study, VIP Study, or below. All to support the fantastic efforts of those seeking to make a better community for all.
